It's Been A While...

Hello,

It's been a while since I've updated my blog or my website...or anything! Been working/holiday/busy etc.

I still can't post photos of my last two jobs yet but soon I can write about Jezebel as the film is finished and will be showing soon! I'm excited to see it!!

I was also approached recently to do the Set Decoration for a short film called The Station Master which will be a Graduation film for the Met Film School in London. A pretty cool Production Designer is working on it too so I'm very excited and looking forward to meeting him and the Producer on Friday and chat about how the film will look. The script is lovely...and it's set in the 50's in a little station house next the railway in Somerset! I am very excited to get stuck in! Nervous also but excited mostly.

Also going to meet a Production Designer next week to show my portfolio..so I should really update it! I always get so nervous showing it to people-what if they don't like my work? think it's crap? etc

I've been a bit crafty since Dan left and started making some cards and doing some painting, I'm going to get stuck into a project soon which I am SO excited about! But it's top secret!

pretty simple cards but they look awesome and we'd sell these for like £3.50 in the shop!

I've also set myself a personal project which I really want to start. I'm so worried about forgetting how to model make/set design in these times between work.

I loved being by the sea...we were only in Devon for 2 days I wish it could have been longer...maybe next year...

Update - Downton Abbey and Jezebel

I have been really bad at updating! That will stop from now on!
Things have been really hectic. I've been working on 2 short films, and it's all been going on in the last two weeks. Unfortunately the shoot for The Equestrian has been pushed back due to one of the actors not being available. Possibly shooting now mid-August.
In the meantime I've been back to Downton Abbey to do a couple more days helping out in the Art Department there. I actually didn't update about that the last time I went there! Was so cool, got to see all the downstairs sets and servants quarters! Just doing general set dressing/tidying, made looads of rice and flour bags and last week lots of christmas crackers and afew other small props-hope you get to see them on TV!
I can't put any photos up as it's all top secret. Was just really good to be in an Art Department and got to meet some new lovely people.

Last weekend was the shoot for Jezebel a short film by Eavesdrop Films a new production company located in Oxford. I think I mentioned in a previous post I was Production Designing for them. I was pretty nervous as this was my first time being the designer! Went really well though and I was so pleased with the final set, was amazing to see it on camera with all the lighting. Couldn't of done it all though without the help of the wonderful Amy Cox!
Again I'm unable to put up any photos due to it being top secret but when I can I will put them up :D

Today I'm just having a day off as I'm completely shattered and I still haven't managed to do everything I wanted to!

This is quite short but I will endeavour to update more in the future :)

NEW BANNER

I LOVE My BRILLIANT new banner for my blog/website! Been on at Dann to design me something for ages and he created this with my name and the filligree(sp????). I wanted to include something of mine  in it so we incorporated a sketch of a carp I did for the Download festival project. I have abit of an obsession with fish at the moment so I think it's fitting and they also represent good fortune and good luck so all round win!

I love it. I may spend the rest of the day looking at my blog now! I shouldn't though. I'm currently doing a script breakdown for Jezebel. Trying to remember all I have learnt from Uni and apply it to REAL LIFE. Argh! Hope it goes well.

Anyway...if you're interested in looking at more of Dann's work go here or follow him @RandomDann. He's just starting out in the design business and heading off to Uni in September to study digital art and 3D design. His drawings are so good I just know he'll do well at uni!

Please do give me some feedback on what you think!

It's Out!!...

Website Building...

...IS DRIVING ME INSANE!!!

I'm finding Google sites really difficult to get the hang of and everything seems to have changed since I first got my website so I'm re-learning it. If you have come across my website and you're reading this I do apologise for the mess my website is in!

So onto work related stuff. Spoke to the amazing Judy Farr IMDB yesterday regarding The Equestrian Film. Trying to arrange a date we are both free to go prop hunting and I managed to talk my way into meeting her on the Downton Abbey set and assist her with Sec dec whilst her buyer is on holiday. EEK I'm so excited!
I could ramble on for ages about how amazing Judy is but that probably wouldn't be cool, suffice to say she is the reason I'm here and doing what I'm (trying) to do, she's completely awesome and I'm so lucky to know her!

Had a minor rush of excitement about possible work experience but that unfortunately didn't work out due to not being in education, but it's all good I was happy to even be considered! It's really nice to know people are reading my emails and CV.

Have had another opportunity to do some more visual merchandising at work last week, I particularly enjoyed this as again there were no real guidelines just a grainy photo of how another store had it and there are so many different products to show off. One of my speciality areas is the Underglass cabinet which sells the very expensive pens/clocks/gifts and leather notebooks (love being in charge of this stuff!) Again, the photo's probably aren't very clear...

Before the cupboards looked quite sparse and they've looked like this for quite a long time now, after a couple of hours it looked like this...

It looks much fuller, it is clearer what products we offer and we got the little items out of the packets and displayed them in front of the boxes to make it look a bit more interesting! I was very pleased with the end result :-D

Set Decoration for TV Commercial

Been meaning to post for a while, figured I should really get it done otherwise I'll forget everything I did last week!

As I mentioned in my previous post I was asked to assist the brilliant Nick Palmer on a commercial! I've been on about 4 commercials now and I think this was the best one so far! I feel that I learnt loads last week and was given a lot more responsibility. It was daunting but I think I pulled it off!
Commercials are completely different from films, there's barely any prep time. Just a couple of recce's some designs then I'm asked to meet the designer, given a list of props and some money and sent off the buy everything. I'm then usually kept on during the shoot as stand-by in case anything needs to be bought or changed last minute.

I was on this advert for 4 days altogether. These were all about 10-12+ hour days, it's pretty intense, but 10 hours on a shoot goes so quickly! Monday was prop buying, Tuesday was filming in some kitchens, closeups of pizzas etc. Weds we were at an old RAF base filming some exteriors and 1 interior and then Thursday filming down in Hove in a beach hut.
Nick asked me for help set dressing some empty offices to be turned into student halls of residence. I came up with a few ideas which he seemed to love and just told me to take charge of that set!!?? He didn't even want to know/see what I'd got before hand he just left me to it and came to look at what I'd done once I'd dressed it on the day!!

This is the information I got before hand, I didn't get to see the location until the day;

My thoughts were just fill the walls with photos and posters and random stuff because that's all that was up in my room in halls. Also a couple of pin boards for the corridors fairy lights. We ended up using red rope lights in the corridor which looked awesome! But you won't be able to see that until the ad comes out.
I luckily had a box of old wall stuff from Uni and lovely people from twitter sent me more posters to use.

The location was actually on an old RAF Base where they do loads of filming now. But I was all alone in the really creepy old building! That's part of what I love about working in this industry though, you get to go in buildings you'd never normally be allowed in :)

Here are some photo's of the rooms I dressed. It probably doesn't look like I've done much, but that's the art of Set Decoration, it shouldn't look like you've done anything and should just look like what it is.

On Thursday we were down in Hove filming in a beach hut on the promenade. Nick wanted it to be sort of vintage looking with old deck chairs and stuff. He had bought most of the props for this but I needed to source bunting and other random bits n bobs. I got down there for 9am and we dressed the hut. It looked gorgeous once we'd finished! Really vintage looking. I even upholstered a chair (the front stripy one)..

We didn't finish filming in Hove until about 8pm and then we had to go onto the next location at Beachy Head. I was sent ahead to dress the front of an articulated lorry - old newpapers/tissue boxes etc and we didn't end up finishing til about 10pm but was a brilliant day.

That was basically my week, amazing fun and just makes me know this is what I want to be doing!

I'm excited to do some work on the film and I hope that I will get some more work soon!

First (proper) Blog Post

Lots seems to be happening for me at the moment, after a while of being slow and a lot of panicking!
I'm currently working on a short film production called The Equestrian and will be Assistant Set Decorator! I was so happy to get this as I had been recommended by someone amazing!
If you'd like to know more about the film there is a fan page on Facebook:

http://www.facebook.com/theequestrianfilm

I need to write an about me to feature on the Crew Profile page..it's hard!
I was at my first dressage event a couple of weeks ago, it was really interesting and pretty amazing how the horse and rider work together. Going for a recce at one of the main locations on Saturday which will be fun and can really get started on prop buying/making.

Next week I will be assisting on another commercial, for Dominos Pizza. Very much looking forward to this I will keep you updated!

Finally, Work has been great recently, they've been so amazing about giving me the time off when I need it for film/tv stuff and still giving me Visual merchandising opportunities! Last week I got to do my first window display!! Our mid-season sale started and we needed to display sale items in the window without it looking like a mess (sales can tend to look messy). Normally we have a visual display guideline but we had none of the products on the guidelines so I basically got to make it up myself. The main idea about visual merchandising at Paperchase is that the products have what looks like a "skyline" so they go in rows up and down, never all in one straight line.

Here is my window display...

Yesterday I had the opportunity to re-merchandise our Celebration and Homeware table which has slowly become messier and messier, it's one of the ranges that probably gets the least looked after. I forgot to take any before photos, but here's some after, they're not very clear as I had to take them at a funny angle. It's probably not obvious what I've done to someone who doesn't work there but there are several rules like the top part must be smallest-tallest with the tallest being on the outer edge of the unit, the skyline effect for the products on the table and underneath, and all products must be in rows with no more than 2/3 different products in one row.. I was really pleased with how they looked once I'd finished...

That's all I have to write for today but I hope that's given everyone reading a small insight into the life of a recent art and design graduate. I will be keeping this blog updated with my work as I'm terrible at sorting out my website!

Thanks for reading
